-적이 있다 vs -본 적이 있다

Basically, -본 적이 있다 has two different grammatical elements as below. 보다 is the original form of ‘본’ which indicates testing or experience of a preceding verb. 적 is a particular event or a time in the past.

I actually have never tried to distinguish its difference before. However, after some research I figured out that the difference between ‘~본 적이 있다’ and ‘~적이 있다’ is:

When you say ‘~본 적이 있다,’ you experienced it with your intention. So it means “I have tried it before.”

When it comes with ‘~적이 있다,’ you experienced it whether you liked to do it or not.

보다 (Auxiliary Verb: 조동사)

  1. Try
    입어 보셔도 되요.

  2. Experience; To have done

I have tried Kimchi for the first time in Korea.
    막걸리 먹어본 적 있어요?
    Have you tried/experienced 막걸리 before?
